From the diverse landscapes of the iconic Snæfellsnes Peninsula to the majestic Dynjandi waterfalls and the charming town of Ísafjörður, this trip takes you along gravel and quiet paved roads that wind through pristine fjords and remote fishing villages. With sweeping views of dramatic coastlines and access to some of Iceland’s most untouched areas, this is an unforgettable way to experience the raw beauty of the Westfjords.

This trip is designed to give you a local’s perspective on the area, blending invigorating cycling with opportunities to connect with Icelandic culture and nature. Whether you’re soaking in natural hot springs, savoring locally prepared meals, or exploring the enchanting Snæfellsjökull National Park, this journey offers a unique and immersive way to discover one of Iceland’s most captivating regions.

*As an adventure cycling trip, we recommend gravel bikes with at least 40c tires or rigid or hardtail mountain bikes. Rental options and e-bikes are available upon arrival.

Arrival and Warm-Up in Reykjavik

Your adventure begins with an evening arrival in Iceland, landing at Keflavik International Airport after an overnight flight from the U.S. Upon arrival, you’ll transfer to Reykjavik, Iceland’s vibrant capital city, where you’ll settle into your accommodations and prepare for the exciting journey ahead.

In the afternoon, you’ll assemble your bikes and take some time to get acclimated before joining the group for a meet-and-greet dinner. Here, you’ll meet your guides, drivers, and fellow participants, review the trip itinerary, and enjoy a warm welcome to Iceland. It’s the perfect start to your Westfjords cycling adventure.

Exploring the Snæfellsnes Peninsula

The day begins with a morning departure from Reykjavik as we make our way to the stunning Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often referred to as “Iceland in Miniature” for its diverse landscapes. This region is home to the iconic Snæfellsjökull National Park, where glaciers, volcanic peaks, and rugged coastlines converge in breathtaking harmony. The scenic drive introduces you to the natural beauty of the area and sets the stage for the adventure ahead.

Upon arrival, we’ll set out on our first full ride, traveling through Snæfellsjökull National Park. The route takes you along the rugged coastline, past dramatic cliffs, and through quiet gravel roads. Finish the day in the picturesque fishing village of Hellissandur, where you’ll stay at the Adventure Hotel Hellissandur. Known for its cozy accommodations and proximity to the region’s attractions, this charming hotel is the perfect place to unwind and take in the magic of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

After your ride, enjoy a delicious meal, explore the village, or simply relax and reflect on the incredible scenery of the day.

Ride Details: 38.5 miles, 2,100 feet of climbing, primarily paved roads with an optional off-road route.

Today, we journey further north as we head toward the southernmost edge of the Westfjords, one of Iceland’s most remote and striking regions. The morning drive offers opportunities to take in dramatic landscapes and pause at key viewpoints to soak in the scenery.

Our ride begins along scenic fjord-side roads, where towering cliffs and vast open views create an unforgettable experience. The day’s journey concludes at Vogur Country Lodge, a welcoming and comfortable accommodation near the tip of the peninsula. After settling in, you’ll enjoy a delicious meal and the warmth of Icelandic hospitality.

Ride Details: 23 miles, 1,300 feet of climbing, scenic gravel and paved roads.

Overnight: Vogur Country Lodge.

Southern Edge of the Westfjords

Begin your day with a ride directly from Vogur Country Lodge, following gravel roads that trace the contours of the fjords. Along the way, you may be lucky enough to spot an Arctic fox, as we were during last year’s journey—a magical encounter with one of Iceland’s most elusive creatures.

After the ride, we’ll transfer northward, stopping along the way to take breathtaking viewpoints. The day concludes at Hotel Flókalundur, located at the edge of a serene fjord. Here, you can unwind in nearby natural hot springs or, for the adventurous, take a refreshing dip in the North Atlantic. End your day with a hearty meal and some well-earned relaxation, surrounded by the peaceful remoteness of Iceland’s Westfjords.

Ride Details: 30 miles, 2,000 feet of climbing, gravel roads.

From here, you can choose to begin your ride or, for those seeking a challenge, tackle a 1,700-foot climb over six miles from the hotel to Dynjandi by bike.

The ride continues along gravel roads that weave through the rugged fjord landscapes. This route is among the most adventurous of the trip, with sections of stream crossings and untouched wilderness. The raw, untamed beauty of the Westfjords unfolds as you make your way toward the village of Þingeyri.

In Þingeyri, we’ll settle into a cozy local guesthouse, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Dinner will be a delicious, home-cooked meal at a favorite local café, where you can savor authentic Icelandic flavors. Afterward, relax at the guesthouse or visit nearby hot springs for a well-deserved soak.

The day begins with a scenic ride along the fjords, offering breathtaking views of towering cliffs, vast stretches of water, and dramatic landscapes that define this remote region.

The route culminates just before the tunnel leading to Ísafjörður, where we’ll transfer through by vehicle for safety. Upon arrival, we’ll settle into our accommodations and have the rest of the day to explore this charming town, known for its colorful buildings, lively harbor, and rich cultural heritage. Stroll through the streets, visit a local café, or simply relax and take in the atmosphere of Ísafjörður.

In the evening, enjoy a group dinner featuring local Icelandic cuisine as we reflect on the incredible journey through the Westfjords so far.

Ride Details: 25–30 miles, variable climbing, scenic gravel and paved roads.

Visit Hallgrímskirkja Church, take a stroll along Laugavegur’s bustling streets lined with shops and cafes, or enjoy the scenic waterfront at Harpa Concert Hall. In the evening, gather for a farewell dinner to celebrate the journey and reflect on the incredible memories made along the way.
